The interior codes can be found on the data plate riveted to the driver's
door. (And on the Build Sheet if you have one). It is usually 3 numbers
and a letter, such as 931L. The first digit is the last number of the model
year of the car, so a 1 would be 61, 71, 81, a 2 would be 62, 72, 82, etc.
You should be able to tell a car within 10 years. This digit should match
the 2nd number of the VIN on 66 up cars. So all 2 seater AMXs would begin
with either an 8 (1968), a 9 (1969), or a 0 (1970).

The second digit is USUALLY the car model, or series. AMC designated the
car lines with model numbers as follows:

00 Series-American 50-69, Hornet 70-77, and Concord 78-83
10 Series- Classic 61-66, Rebel 58-59 and 67-70, Matador 71-78
20 Series-Rebel V8-58-60, Classic V8 61
30 Series- AMX 68-70, Concord-Based Eagle 80+
40 Series- Gremlin 70-78, Spirit 79-83
50 Series- Marlin 65-67, Spirit-Based Eagle (SX4, Kammback)
60 Series-Pacer 75-80
70 Series-Javelin 68-74
80 Series-Ambassador 46-74

Within the series was a designation of 2 door hardtop (American would be 0
for Series, 7 for hardtop, or 07. A wagon would be 08, etc. More on models
later as this is not on the Interior codes). However, earlier cars would
use the model number from the individual series. Americans were 110, 220,
330, 440, Rogue, and Classics were 550, 660, 770, Rebel, and Ambassadors
were 880, 990, and DPL. So the "3" would not be an AMX but an American 330.
It evens out by the 70s, though.

The third digit is the interior color. Believe it or not, they are pretty
consistent as follows:

1-Black, Charcoal
2-Gray, Platinum
3-Blue
4-Green
5-Red
6-Beige, Tan, Saddle, Brown, Cordovan, Gold, Burgundy, Light Rose
7-Aqua, Avocado, Maroon
8-Black, White, Parchment, Turquoise
9-Yellow

The fourth digit is a letter and explains what type of interior and material
is used. Again, they are pretty consistent as follows:

A-Standard, base level
B-Standard base level vinyl
C-Fabric
D-Bucket seats with Fabric
E-Cloth, Corduroy
F-Bucket-Standard Vinyl
G-Wide bucket with Fabric
H-Wide bucket with Vinyl
J-Standard base
K-Bucket with Fabric
L-Leather for later cars (69 up?), Bucket with Vinyl
V-Velour
W-Optional Custom trim

There is also some Special Order interiors out there with the code "00"
(same as paint).

I do not have anything handy for pre 66 and post 75 cars so for today I will
have to stick with just 1966-74 interior codes. If I have time I will get
the others.
